Futures that Work Scholarships FAQs

Applications for the 2024 Futures that Work mental health and addiction scholarships are now open.


 

How can I apply for a Futures that Work scholarship?
Once you complete the eligibility quiz, you will be invited to apply, provided all eligibility criteria are met.
Who is eligible to be awarded these scholarships?

The Futures that Work Mental Health scholarships are for those of indigenous Pasifika descent who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents at the time of application. The applicant must also be enrolled in a relevant mental health-related qualification at an approved NZQA accredited education provider in New Zealand.

What are the important dates?
Applications open: 4 December 2023

Applications close: 5 February 2024, 5pm

Successful applicants will be notified: in late March 2024

Awarded Scholarship funds will be paid*: Full year or semester one fees will be paid in April 2024. Semester two fees will be paid in July 2024.

*Awarded scholarship funds will be paid directly to the education provider.

Are the scholarships for those who will be studying in their first year towards their qualification?
No, the Futures that Work scholarships cannot be awarded to first-year students due to the government’s free fees scheme for first-year students.
Can the scholarships be used for research project costs, or course-related costs?
No, the Futures that Work scholarships can only be used for tuition fees.
Do recipients have to be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident at the time of application?
Yes, scholarship recipients have to be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident at the time of application and during the course of their study.

Note: New Zealand Citizenship/residency is assessed as per Ministry of Education definition of a Domestic Student in New Zealand.

1. New Zealand citizen

  • New Zealand birth certificate (if the child was born before 1 January 2006).
  • New Zealand birth certificate confirming that the individual is a New Zealand citizen by birth (if the individual was born on or after 1 January 2006).
  • Passport (New Zealand, Tokelauan, Cook Island or Niuean) (current or expired).
  • New Zealand citizenship certificate.
  • Birth certificate (Tokelauan, Cook island or Niuean) if the individual was born before 1 January 2006.
  • Birth certificate (Tokelauan, Cook island or Niuean) with confirmation that the individual is a citizen by birth (if the individual was born before 1 January 2006).
  • Certificate of naturalisation (Tokelauan, Cook island or Niuean).
  • Certificate of registration (Tokelauan, Cook island or Niuean).
  • Letter of confirmation (Tokelauan, Cook island or Niuean).

2. New Zealand or Australian resident

  • Other passport with New Zealand residence class visa label or stamp, or other evidence of residency.
How are scholarship applications assessed?
An assessment panel will assess all scholarship applications based on the following criteria: Workforce prioritisation, academic capability, socio-economic need, community connectedness and commitment and leadership potential.
Can nursing students apply for these scholarships?
Nursing students who are specialising in mental health or addictions are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Additionally, nurses who are currently working in mental health or addiction may also apply. Nursing students are also encouraged to apply for the Te Whatu Ora Pacific Health Scholarships
How much is the scholarship?
Typically, we fund up to a maximum of $5000 per year. However, it is up to the assessment panel to recommend the amount of the scholarship awarded.
Will the Futures that Work scholarship cover all my tuition fees?
The assessment panel will determine the scholarship amount. If the scholarship is only for a portion of the tuition fee, the applicant will be responsible for paying the education provider the outstanding amount.
Can I use my scholarship for supervision costs?
No. The Futures that Work scholarships are only available for tuition fees.
Is my scholarship for the full year or can I apply for one semester only?
Scholarships can be for one semester or a full year.
What if I change institutions, my primary field of study, or course papers?
Scholarships are awarded based on the details supplied as part of the application. Any changes to primary field of study or institution will nullify your scholarship.

A minor change to course papers based on timetable issues or availability of the papers may be accepted, please email scholarships@leva.co.nz to discuss.

If I am successful, will the funds be paid to me?
No. Fees will be paid directly to the education provider.
When will my fees be paid?
Fees can only be paid once we have received a copy of your fees invoice. Full year or semester one fees will be paid in April. Semester two fees will be paid in July. Any delay in Le Va receiving a copy of your fees invoice will delay the date that fees are paid.
If my education provider charges me late fees, will Le Va pay for these?
No. It is your responsibility to inform your education provider you have a scholarship, getting your invoice in on time and to pay for any penalties incurred or shortfall between your course fees and the scholarship amount awarded.
What if I defer or withdraw from my studies, can I apply my scholarship to next year?
Scholarships are awarded based on successful completion of papers the year prior. You can apply however it will be up to the discretion of the assessment panel if you will be awarded a scholarship.
Will my scholarship be refunded if I withdraw?
Scholarships refunds are paid directly to Le Va by the education provider but only if you withdraw within the specified deadline of the education provider; this is usually within the first two to three weeks of study. Please contact Le Va as soon as you decide to withdraw so that we may stop payment of invoice.
What if I don’t pass my papers, can I apply for a scholarship next year?
Scholarships are awarded based on successful completion of papers the year prior. You can apply however it will be up to the discretion of the assessment panel if you will be awarded a scholarship.
